Young Johnny Strabler (Marlon Brando) is the leader of the Black Rebels, a 40-strong motorcycle gang that rides freely across the country with no particular goal in mind. In the town of Wrightsville, the young men hold a street race and break into a bar. While Bleeker, the owner of the place, is happy to have someone leave a bigger bill, his brother - a local policeman - is on guard and trying to avoid any unpleasantness.

Johnny falls in love at first sight with the young barmaid Kathie (Mary Murphy). Little does he know that the girl is the policeman's daughter. When rival biker gang Chin (Lee Marvin) arrives in the town, it's clear that violence will be unavoidable...
