Bridget Jones is a slightly rounder "30-something" who has seemingly simple and achievable desires in her life - to lose some pounds and find a real relationship. But in the very year she entered with countless resolutions and a decision to keep a diary, disasters abound in its pages. First of all, she falls in love with her handsome boss, only to discover in time that she is just a "side-kick" because the "regular" is not only skinny but rich.
So she quit her job at the publishing house, where she quite enjoyed it, and plunged headlong into a career as a television presenter, which, she discovers, is far from a profession all smiles and success. Her mother, who only yesterday was willing to do everything for the welfare and marriage of her daughter, suddenly does everything for some old-fashioned seladon, while her father watches silently with a tragic expression. What good is the well-meaning advice of friends when Bridget feels like a ball of lightning. It's a good thing there's a bottle of her favourite Chardonnay on hand from time to time and a packet of cigarettes always within reach.
