About ten years ago, the world was destroyed. No one knows what actually happened. Maybe it was a nuclear attack, maybe it was a cosmic event. Millions of people died, either as a direct result of the disaster, or from starvation or despair at the slow death of those around them after the power supply stopped. The Man (Viggo Mortensen) and the Boy (Kodi Smit-McPhee) are on a quest for the hope they expect to find on the coast to the south. They carry all their meager but extremely precious possessions in a shopping cart, equipped with a rearview mirror to see if anyone is following them. Their only source of joy is the occasional find of food or drink. On their journey, they encounter many desperate survivors, be they robber gangs, cannibals or thieves. Throughout the film, we also see flashbacks to The Man's happier past and his life with The Woman (Charlize Theron). The Journey is an adventure and horror story. It's a road movie as well as a love story between a father and son. It is a thrilling tale of man's greatest virtues and sins.
