The unchivalrous struggles of the Czech knight Rynda, portrayed brilliantly by Rudolf Hrušínský. Bohemia, autumn 1647. The land has been devastated by the Thirty Years’ War, oppressed by Habsburg power and the violence of the Catholic Church, which seeks with all its might to eradicate the last remnants of Protestantism. Poverty reigns everywhere, often accompanied by hunger. A perfect reflection of these harsh conditions is the small fortress of a Czech nobleman where this story takes place. Knight Václav Rynda of Loučka wants only to survive and live in peace during these difficult times. He long resists the persuasion of the Protestant exile Jindřich Donovalský, now in the service of the French king, who tries to provoke him into rebelling against the Habsburgs. When the Peace of Westphalia is concluded, the war is over for Donovalský and his companions.
