The residents of Black Rock have their own way of welcoming the mysterious, one-armed stranger, John J. Macreedy. They'll be glad to see him go. Or they'll make sure he goes out in a wooden chest. Two-time Academy Award® winner Spencer Tracy (nominated for the 1955 Academy Award® for Best Actor for this film) stars as Macreedy, a World War II veteran who has his reasons for coming to Black Rock and won't back down even when the residents greet him with threats and violence. Director John Sturges (The Great Escape) ratchets up the tension, revealing step by step the reasons for Macreedy's mission, and the town's terrible secret. Among the local bullies and their henchmen we find Robert Ryan, Walter Brennan, Ernest Borgnine and Lee Marvin. "I'm half horse, half alligator," says one of them. But they find out Macreedy is made of even tougher stuff...
