Charlie Watson (Hailee Steinfeld) celebrates her 18th birthday, but she doesn't have much to be happy about. A fresh megaburst has popped up on her forehead, and her hopes of getting a dream car from her family are dashed the moment she unwraps her extremely embarrassing presents. It is only when the owner of the salvage yard where she works that takes pity on her and gives her a yellow Volkswagen Beetle, which, however, falls more into the category of a gift.
Only the most optimistic person would bet on the fact that this car will ever be in working order again. Charlie manages to get it running at least enough to get it home to the garage, where he tries to fix it up. But when he first looks down at the undercarriage, two big blue eyes stare up at it, and Charlie immediately realizes that this is no ordinary car. The girl befriends Bumblebee the Autobot remarkably quickly, despite the fact that he can't communicate with her except through snippets of songs from the car radio due to the damage.
Given that Bumblebee is being sought out rather intensely by the hostile Decepticons from his home planet and the similarly dangerous government agent Burns (John Cena), Charlie and Bumblebee won't have the time or space for a closer introduction. On the run from their enemies, however, they discover that against all odds, they may be unbeatable in this disparate tandem...
