Buddy (Jude Hill) is a nine-year-old boy who feels like the whole world belongs to him, even though it's currently limited to the streets of his native Belfast. Here he experiences real boyhood adventures and first love (or rather, clumsily tries to). When he needs advice, he can turn to his grandmother and grandfather (Judi Dench and Ciarán Hinds); when he needs his scraped knee treated or a hug, he has his loving mother (Caitriona Balfe); and his father (Jamie Dornan) is there primarily to be someone Buddy can look up to. However, the clear, safe, and understandable world of the late 1960s begins to be disrupted by social and religious conflicts that are sweeping through Belfast and inevitably reaching their street. The heroes and villains that Buddy and his friends had only played with until then are suddenly everywhere. Where will Buddy's family belong in this changed world?
