The story, from the pen of Robert Harris, charts four days in the life of Fluke Kelso (Daniel Craig), a slightly dishevelled former Oxford history professor who finds himself in Moscow for a conference on the newly opened Soviet archives. One night, he is visited at his hotel by former NKVD officer and bodyguard of secret police chief Lavrentiy Beria. This old man claims to have been in Stalin's dacha at the time of his death and helped Beriya steal the dictator's secret files. Kelso decides to use his last morning in Moscow to check out the man's story. But a harmless question in Lenin's library soon becomes a deadly chase through nighttime Moscow to northern Russia and the desolate forests near the White Sea port of Arkhangelsk, where Stalin's last secret has been hidden for nearly half a century...
