Summers started out as a jazz guitarist, playing in various clubs as a teenager... His professional career began in the 1960s in Zoot Money's Big Roll Band. In 1968, he was a member of Soft Machine for several months. The Rolling Stones were also interested in Summers in the mid-1970s, and he was to serve as lead guitarist there after Mick Taylor's departure. But the band eventually chose Ron Wood. In 1977, he joined The Police, where he worked until they broke up in 1984.
