A process called cellular miniaturisation has been developed by Norwegian scientists as one of the cures for the planet's impending overpopulation. Small people eat less and take up less space, it makes sense. And to ensure that people enter this program in droves and with enthusiasm, it comes with gigantic economic benefits and permanent residency in the mini-millionaire's paradise of Leisureland. The prospect of getting rich also brings Paul Safranek (Matt Damon) and his wife Audrey (Kristen Wiig) into the program. Childless forty-somethings with boring jobs and uninviting apartments, they can't see a better life prospect anyway. After passing the initial interview, the necessary grooming (all body hair and fillings must be removed) is followed by anesthesia and the actual miniaturization. When the 10'10" Paul wakes up "on the other side", he learns that Audrey has finally backed out. Fortunately, the rich but abandoned Paul is not left to grieve long by his new "friends," Serbian playboy Dusan (Christoph Waltz) and a one-legged Vietnamese dissident (Hong Chau). With them, he experiences more in a few weeks than he has in his entire life so far and realises that even in a small world, big things can be experienced...
