Set in a period deeply rooted in North American mythology, the film presents sensitive tough guys, fallen and innocent women, a traditionalist religious community resistant to progress, and the infectious joy of a thriving business. Director–screenwriter duo John Hillcoat and Nick Cave (The Proposition) return with a Prohibition-era gangster film about the legendary Bondurant brothers (Tom Hardy, Shia LaBeouf, and Jason Clarke), whose quiet trade in homemade alcohol in a remote corner of Virginia is one day challenged by the relentless opposition of Special Agent Rakes (a perverse dandy portrayed by Guy Pearce). Despite its historical setting, the film—also featuring Gary Oldman, Jessica Chastain, and Mia Wasikowska—is far from devoid of parallels to the present day. Although the Bondurant brothers run an illegal business, they are at the same time the most principled residents of a town thoroughly riddled with corruption.
