A very unsuccessful singer-songwriter Jack (Himesh Patel) wants to hang up his guitar because no matter what he does, only his best friend Ellie (Lily James) will listen. But then, due to a momentary mysterious global eclipse, he gets hit by a bus. And it not only completely changes his life, it also causes one musical disaster. When Jack crawls out of his injury and strums the Beatles' "Yesterday" on his guitar at a party held in honor of his recovery, he can't help but wonder at the reactions of his friends, who act as if they're hearing one of the most famous songs of all time for the first time in their lives. It might be a bad joke if Internet searches didn't behave the same way. It's like the Beatles never existed and Jack senses an opportunity. All he has to do is recall all the hits from the legendary Liverpool Beetles and the world will be at his feet. And it works! So well, in fact, that even the famous Ed Sheeran (who plays himself in the film), who takes Jack on tour as an opening act, recognizes that the boy from nowhere is far more talented than he is. Jack's joy is tempered only by two "little things" - the knowledge that he is committing a worldwide fraud and the loss of Ellie. She feels like she should finally stop loving him since it's been one-sided all along, and heartbroken, she sends him to L.A. to make the greatest record ever. But when you sing about how all you need is love to live, it can suddenly change your priorities.
