Andrew Neiman is a nineteen-year-old jazz drummer who dreams of stardom, but isn't sure if his dreams will ever come true. Haunted by his father's failed writing career, he is determined to rise to the very top of the most prestigious music conservatory. One evening, Andrew, who is currently practicing the drums, is confronted by Terence Fletcher, a conductor renowned as much for his teaching talent as his ruthless practices. Although they don't share much that evening, Fletcher awakens Andrew's desire to achieve his goal.
To Andrew's surprise, the next day, Fletcher asks for Andrew to be assigned to his band. This single act changes the young man's life forever. At first, Andrew is forced to function only as a "substitute", turning the score over to the lead drummer. But at the next competition the band attends, the lead drummer, through fate or something else, loses his score. Andrew, who knows the whole part by heart, gets a chance to play. Although this act alienates the other musicians, the band wins the competition and Andrew has the chance to become Fletcher's new favourite...
