Doctor Dráuzio Varella was called to Brazil’s largest prison – Carandiru – to begin HIV prevention and treatment among inmates. He entered one of the harshest prison environments in the world, where he witnessed firsthand the utterly inhumane treatment of prisoners. Hundreds of inmates lived in horrific conditions. In 1992, a series of riots broke out in Carandiru prison, escalating into a rebellion in which 111 prisoners were killed.
