- Description
Freshly commissioned Second Lieutenant in the US Navy, Willie Keith (R. Francis) joins the Caine during the war. His first impressions are universally bad: he longed to get a job on an aircraft carrier or a battle cruiser, and instead ends up on a scruffy minesweeper whose crew has no regard for discipline. That's why Keith is glad when the phlegmatic Captain DeVriess is replaced by the vessel's new commander, the soldierly Captain Queeg (H. Bogart). However, the officers and rank-and-file crew soon learn the flip side of Queeg's leadership. The captain is almost obsessed with trifles. He is able to dwell endlessly on the sailors' shirts while making one mistake after another during drills. In a fierce battle, he shows himself to be a coward. When a typhoon hits and the ship is in danger of sinking, executive officer Steve Maryk (V. Johnson) takes command. Willie supports him in this. Only, in doing so, they commit mutiny...
