Description:

This dramatic World War II story takes place near the northern French city of Dunkirk in early June 1940, when German troops went on the counter-offensive, pushing Allied forces to the sea coast and forcing them to retreat across the English Channel. Its heroes are members of the French infantry who, despite the danger, are ordered to wait on the coast until the evacuation of British troops is completed as part of the massive Operation Dynamo. Although the coast is affected by a bloody conflict that has already claimed many lives of soldiers and locals, some still refuse to leave and abandon their homes. Like Jeanne, a sympathetic girl who helps French soldiers in a difficult situation, treats the wounded and befriends a young, sensitive soldier, Julien Maillat. Julien saves the girl from a rape attempted by two of his colleagues and tries his best to keep faith in her survival, but this becomes increasingly difficult in the face of mounting stress and tension. The surrounded soldiers have to defend themselves against heavy pressure from German tanks and infantry, while becoming easy targets for the German fighters that thunder almost incessantly over their heads. For a long time Julien tries in vain to persuade Jeanne to change her mind and leave the dangerous place, and when the girl finally agrees to leave, the tragic finale of the story comes, depicting one of the saddest chapters of the Second World War...
