Tom Cruise plays David Ames, a womanizing playboy who finds romantic redemption when he falls for his best friend's girlfriend Sofia (Penelope Cruz, reprising her role from the original film). Before that relationship can begin, however, David is coaxed into getting into a car driven by former lover Julia (Cameron Diaz), who turns out to be suicidal. Julie drives the car off a bridge, killing herself and horribly disfiguring David. Reconstructive surgery and the loving support of Sofia seem to turn David's fortunes around, but strange events soon make him doubt the reality of his existence and that he is in control of his life, even though he is suspected of being complicit in Julie's death...
