Handsome and successful scientist Will Caster (Johnny Depp) has a lifelong dream: to create a machine endowed with artificial intelligence and the ability to experience emotions—one capable of concentrating the collective knowledge and consciousness of humanity. His controversial, visionary experiments bring him both fame and powerful enemies. Extremists opposed to artificial intelligence attempt to stop him and carry out an assassination just as his work is nearing completion.

In doing so, they inadvertently accelerate the “godlike experiment,” and Will himself becomes the central figure of the Transcendence project. For his wife Evelyn (Rebecca Hall) and fellow scientist Max (Paul Bettany), the question is no longer whether it can be done, but whether it should be—and what will ultimately happen. Will’s consciousness is connected to a supercomputer and the vast universe of the artificial mind he created. The consequences are soon felt by the entire world.
