The dramatisation of the marriage of the British King Henry VIII (Richard Burton) and his second wife, the unfortunate Anne Boleyn (Genevieve Bujold), has received ten Academy Award nominations and one statuette. When Anne begins to seek marriage instead of an illegitimate union, Henry, at her urging, dumps Catherine of Aragon and marries her.
However, this act causes a rift between the Crown and the Church. However, Anne's inability to bear the king the son he desires leads Henry to look for a more suitable candidate.
