All secrets will come out one day. I guess Baker (Matthew McConaughey) has been through a lot. He's healing his life's wounds in the peace and heat of an exotic island paradise somewhere in the Caribbean. He makes his living as a fishing guide, has his own boat called The Silence Before the Storm, has a house and a mistress (Diane Lane) in the village, and drinks away his troubled past in a bar.
The silence of his life is shattered like lightning by ex-wife Karen (Anne Hathaway). And she brings a storm. She appears out of nowhere, desperately demanding Baker kill her current abusive husband. In the name of their son together and the one million dollars as a reward, he is to take her husband on a fishing expedition and throw him to the sharks in the middle of the ocean.
Baker initially refuses, but the calm waters of the Caribbean paradise are already irreversibly blackened. Remorse and fear for his son begin to haunt him even more and he begins to reconsider the proposal. The ensuing wave of passion, events and twists and turns will reveal even the most hidden secrets...
