Directed by Christopher Nolan, the action-adventure fantasy follows Batman Begins and sees Christian Bale reprise his role as Batman/Bruce Wayne in a never-ending battle against crime. Wayne, dressed in a Batman costume, goes after the King of Criminals, the Joker, known by his symbol - a playing card with a joker on it - which he leaves at crime scenes, along with Lieutenant James Gordon (Gary Oldman) of the Gotham Police Department. This time, the cut-faced joker (Heath Ledger) plans to prove to Batman that the words Gotham and peace will never stand side by side in the same sentence. Sal Maroni (Eric Roberts) sits in the vacant seat left by the former kingpin of the local mob and takes control of most of the gangs in Gotham. Also on the scene is new DA Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart), who could shuffle the deck (and the joker in the deck)...
