In 1752, Joshua and Naomi Collins set sail from Liverpool, England, with their son Barnabas to start a new life in America. But even the ocean cannot help them escape the mysterious curse that haunts their family. Twenty years pass, and Barnabas has the world at his feet – or at least the town of Collinsport, Maine. The owner of the Collinwood estate, Barnabas is a wealthy gentleman, powerful and a notorious playboy. Until he makes a fatal mistake – he breaks the heart of Angelique Bouchard. The head of the family, Elizabeth Collins Stoddard, calls in a local psychiatrist, Dr Julia Hoffman, to help them resolve their family troubles. The estate is also home to Elizabeth's unsuccessful brother Roger Collins, her rebellious teenage daughter Carolyn, and Roger's precocious 10-year-old son David Collins.
