George is a scientist who manages to build a time machine with which he wants to explore the distant future. There he finds two different races, one sweet and gentle and the other cannibalistic, living underground. The underground people steal his time machine and he has to get back home.
The book by H.G. Wells was the basis for this film, and special effects pioneer George Paul, whose feature films and shorts have won a combined seven Academy Awards and special prizes, sat behind the director's chair for this classic. The result is a beloved adventure filled with visual wonders, from the nuclear destruction of London (complete with lava eruptions) to colorful time travel.
