On a dirt road somewhere in the southwest, two vagrants meet. Max (Gene Hackman), a released convict who enjoys the heat (which is why he wears several layers of sweaters) as well as the bar fights that often bring him into conflict with the law, and Lion (Al Pacino), a former sailor, a fragile, trusting young man traveling to see the child he has never seen. The two men join forces and travel as a pair, hitchhiking, on freight trains as they can. First to Denver to see Max's sister, then to Detroit to see Lion's ex-wife, and finally to Pittsburgh, where Max has saved money and plans to use it to open a car wash. But their tragicomic anabasis in the pursuit of happiness in an inert world has more twists and turns than either of them anticipated. In the end, the most valuable thing they gain on their journey is their friendship...
