Harry Hole (Michael Fassbender) is the enfant terrible of a team investigating crimes in the Norwegian capital. On the one hand, he is an exceptionally good detective whose unconventional methods almost always lead to success, but on the other hand, he is an irresponsible alcoholic with so many transgressions that not only his superiors but also his girlfriend Rachel (Charlotte Gainsbourg), whom he has just broken up with, no longer want to overlook them.
The only thing standing between him and drinking is a case that would make him think differently. Unfortunately for a woman who disappeared from her house in the middle of the night and was found brutally murdered a few days later, Harry has just come to terms with it. The erect Snowman left at the crime scene as the only clue suggests that this perpetrator wants to play, and that he may very well have played like this a few times in the past. And that he's getting more and more into it, and he's not about to stop.
Although Harry is aided in his investigation by the brilliant young investigator Katherine Bratt (Rebecca Ferguson), the cops keep pulling out the stops. A barrage of suspected and real leads and several suspects create the perfect screen for the perpetrator to build Snowmen, murder and make fun of Harry Hole. But for a great cop, all it takes is a slight mistake by the killer to catch a clue and never let it go...
