One of the most popular TV series among viewers, based on the novel by Vladimír Neff, which, at the time of its creation in 1968, managed to bring comfort, encouragement, and hope to its audience. A chronicle of two entrepreneurial families — the Borns and the Nedobyls — set against the backdrop of historical and personal upheavals in the second half of the 19th century. Czech patriot Jan Born opens a Slavic store on the most German street in Prague, while Martin Nedobyl establishes the first Czech shipping and brokerage company. Their fates become intertwined through Nedobyl’s marriage to the widow Tolarová and Born’s marriage to her stepdaughter. However, both men lose their wives in a tragic railway accident. While Born bears the loss with dignity, the tragedy destroys almost everything human within Nedobyl. How did their stories continue during the era of industrial and cultural development and the efforts of Czech patriots to secure equal rights for their nation and language within the Austro-Hungarian Empire?
