Officers Martin Riggs and Roger Murtaugh are on the trail of drug smugglers. Tracking accountant Leo Getz, who has embezzled mafia money, leads them to South African diplomat Rudd. Both detectives have ample evidence, but Rudd and his killers continue to work undisturbed under the cloak of diplomatic immunity. Riggs, nicknamed "Lethal Weapon", resorts to indiscriminate methods.
He even uses his attractive secretary against Rudd. An undeclared war breaks out between the gangsters and the two cops. Murtaugh narrowly escapes a planted bomb and Riggs' caravan is turned into a shot-up wreck after an encounter with Rudd's men. However, the indestructible detectives slowly gain the upper hand and Rudd prepares to retreat. A decisive confrontation is about to take place on the docks of Los Angeles harbour...
