American Civil War, second half of the 19th century. A young Federal Army captain, Robert Gould Shaw, survives a battle wound thanks to the help of a black undertaker, John Rawlins.
After recovering, he is promoted and becomes commander of the first all-black unit. He enlists the help of his childhood friend, Major Cabot Forbes, to help command the 54th Volunteer Infantry Regiment.
The war of the North against the South is in full swing, which means, among other things, that black soldiers dressed in Union uniforms will be executed by the enemy without mercy, as will their white commanders...
