The inhabitants of a small Mexican village know how to handle hoes and shovels, but not revolvers and rifles. Almost everything they manage to grow through hard work must be handed over to the ruthless bandit Calvera and his men. One day, however, their patience runs out. Three of them set out toward the American border, hoping to find someone who can teach them how to fight and help them stand up to Calvera.
