Young Roy Hobbs (Robert Redford), blessed with an extraordinary talent for baseball, carves his own bat from the wood of a lightning-struck tree, names it "Wonderboy," and leaves his family farm for Chicago to make his mark.

However, an encounter with a deranged fan who leaves him severely wounded delays his career by sixteen years. On the cusp of middle age, he joins the New York Knights, but he must fight hard for his place on the team. His "Wonderboy" eventually shines, but the price of success is terribly high...
