A romantic adventure story set in the 14th century about a man's desire to change his own destiny. Since childhood, the immature William Thatcher has dreamed of a life of chivalry, but only men of noble birth can become knights. William and his friends, the good-hearted Roland and the hot-tempered Wat, witness the death of their master, the knight Hector, just before winning a tournament. Despite the threat of punishment, William decides to don the armour of the dead knight and finish the tournament in the name of survival. Thus begins William's transformation into the noble Sir Ulrich von Lichtenstein of Gelderland.
On the way to their first knightly tournament, they meet the oddball writer Geoff Chaucer, who falsifies William's family tree and helps him to become noble. Geoff becomes a member of William's company, which is gradually joined by Kate, a young woman who, after her husband's death, takes over his blacksmithing trade and manages to create a special light but strong armour for William. At the tournament, William meets the beautiful noblewoman Jocelyn, with whom he falls in love. But he is opposed by the ruthless Duke Adhemar, determined to destroy his dream. Adhemar wants to marry Jocelyn, defeat William in the greatest tournament of all and discover his secret...
