Detroit meets Los Angeles luxury: Axel Foley in action. The story follows Axel Foley (Eddie Murphy), an unorthodox, street-smart, and incredibly resourceful detective from the rugged streets of Detroit. When his childhood friend is murdered in cold blood in Axel's own apartment, he heads to California on a rogue mission to track down the killers. The trail leads him straight into the glamorous, upscale, and straight-laced neighborhood of Beverly Hills, Los Angeles. The local police department, accustomed to wealthy tranquility and strict adherence to protocol, is instantly driven crazy by Axel’s disruptive, fast-talking street methods. But Foley won't be stopped—recruiting two local detectives, Billy Rosewood (Judge Reinhold) and John Taggart (John Ashton), he unleashes a chaotic, rule-bending investigation to take down a powerful drug smuggling ring.
💡 Fun Facts from Production
• A last-minute swap: The role of Axel Foley was originally written for Sylvester Stallone. Stallone wanted to turn the movie into a gritty, ultra-violent action film and completely rewrote the script. However, just two weeks before filming began, he abruptly left the project due to budget disputes. Eddie Murphy was quickly cast, bringing the comedy back and improvising massively on set.
• Uncontrollable laughter on set: Murphy’s improvisations were so brilliant and hilarious that co-stars Judge Reinhold and John Ashton struggled immensely to keep a straight face. In several takes that made the final cut, the actors can be seen biting their lips or looking down to hide their laughter.
• The legendary banana trick: The famous scene where Axel Foley stuffs bananas into the tailpipe of the police car tailing him became so popular that audiences worldwide began trying the prank in real life after the movie's release.
• Birth of a musical icon: The main theme song Axel F became a massive global phenomenon. Harold Faltermeyer originally composed it using a handful of analog synthesizers, and the studio initially rejected it, thinking it was too experimental for a movie. It went on to become one of the best-selling tracks of the decade.
