Under the Cover of Night is set in the turbulent 1920s during Prohibition, which failed to stop the flow of alcohol in an underground network run by gangsters. The opportunity to gain power and money is offered to anyone with enough ambition and courage.

One such man is Joe Coughlin (Ben Affleck), the son of Boston's police chief, who long ago turned his back on his tough upbringing to become an outlaw. But even criminals have rules, and Joe breaks the most important one: he pisses off the biggest capo by stealing his money and his mistress.

This acrimonious affair ends tragically, and Joe embarks on a journey of revenge, ambition, love, and betrayal that propels him out of Boston and straight into Tampa and its hot rum underworld...
