We meet Eastwood as Earl Stone, a man in his 80s who is broken, abandoned, and facing foreclosure on his company's assets for not paying his mortgage. In this situation, he is offered an opportunity to earn money - a job as a driver. Easy. Only Earl doesn't know that he's just signed on as a courier for a Mexican drug cartel.
He's doing well - so well, in fact, that the goods he's transporting grow exponentially in volume until it all comes to a point where Earl is put in charge of the whole business. Earl's troubles with lack of money are there, but his past is relentlessly at his heels, and the cartel isn't the only one keeping an eye on Earl.
The mysterious smuggler also flashes on the radar of aspiring DEA agent Colin Bates (Bradley Cooper). Old sins are weighing on Earl, and it's unclear if he'll be able to set them all straight before law enforcement or Cartel enforcers catch up with him...
