The famous, originally French dark fairy tale about a prince cursed into a terrifying beastly form, who can only be freed by true love, was adapted by director Juraj Herz into a visually striking film that draws on mysterious, confined spaces and lyrically styled storytelling. The story of the youngest daughter of an impoverished merchant, who voluntarily sets out for the enchanted castle to save her father, was originally adapted by František Hrubín.
