What happens in the mountains stays in the mountains, and let them do whatever they want down below. The real spice of the Giant Mountains (Krkonoše) are the local highlanders who live here no matter the season. A one-legged female skier, a snowcat driver who stays sober on Epiphany, a legendary lady-killer blessed with infertility, and a bartender with a passion for fortune-telling.

And then there is Pavka, the oldest living member of the traditional Bulán cross-country skiing family. After all, his father broke a ski pole during the famous fifty-kilometer race and still finished eleventh, and Pavka had his son born on top of Sněžka Mountain at a high altitude to oxygenate faster. But it is his son Jura who gives him grey hairs. Instead of cross-country skiing, he is chasing a completely different kind of "fifties".

He is addicted to seducing mature women, chasing the frost out of their souls. Jan Hilský arrives at the race—which Jura probably won't finish again—with his mother, and besides a great finishing time, he has a personal goal. To achieve it, he heads "up" into the snow-covered world of mountain chalets. There, he triggers an avalanche of events and memories, and last but not least, he learns how to spit through the fog...
