Huge Kaiju monsters begin to emerge from the sea, attacking cities and terrorizing humanity. They come through a rift between two tectonic plates at the bottom of the Pacific. Only giant robots called Jaegers, controlled by a human crew, can stop the intelligent monsters. But the robots can't be controlled alone; each must be manned by a crew of two, and the two pilots must mind-meld together. This brings problems with crew selection, not every mind can connect with the other without bringing side effects. At first the robots are very effective, but over time the monsters improve and begin to have the upper hand over the humans. Civilization stands on the brink of defeat, and has no choice but to rely on an outdated robot crew made up of a retired pilot and an inexperienced rookie. Two unlikely heroes become the last hope before the impending apocalypse...
