Photographer J.B. Jeffries (James Stewart) is confined to a wheelchair due to a broken leg. His companion in long moments becomes a window leading directly into the yard, where Jeff has a view of his neighbours' apartments. Watching the fate of the tenants in the opposite building absorbs him so much that he begins to suspect one of them of murdering his wife.
