Aboard a luxury liner, famously single playboy Nicky Ferrante (Cary Grant) returns to the United States from Europe in the company of a famous single guy. He meets the attractive and wholesomely confident Terry (Deborah Kerr) and the two fall in love, even though they're bound elsewhere and Nicky is even about to get married. Is it just a fleeting banter of the senses in the comfortable surroundings of an ocean liner where one can't escape the other for long, even if they wanted to, or a true and deep affection? They both decide to find out. Before landing in New York harbor, they promise to meet on the observation deck of the Empire State Building six months from now. Provided, of course, that they are free of commitments at the time and that Nicky, who takes great pride in never having worked, can support his future wife...
