The year is 1942, and the Nazi army is tightening its deadly grip on Russia. The residents of Stalingrad, under the leadership of Khrushchev (Bob Hoskins) and with the courageous efforts of Vassili Zaitsev (Jude Law), are bravely resisting the assault. The heroic deeds of this elite sniper become legendary thanks to the propaganda efforts of political officer and his best friend, Danilov (Joseph Fiennes). To counter Zaitsev, the Germans send in their own top marksman, Major König (Ed Harris), with the mission to eliminate him. When both Vassili and Danilov fall in love with the same beautiful uniformed woman (Rachel Weisz), Danilov turns away from his friend, leaving Vassili to face his enemy alone.
