- Description
John Malkovich as a man who loved to play lighthearted games with love. The 1988 American film directed by Stephen Frears is the third adaptation of the well-known late 18th century French novel by Choderlos de Laclos (including the little-known 1978 Japanese version). The story of Viscount Valmont and his frivolous love games inspired director Miloš Forman in the late 1980s and, even earlier, French director Roger Vadim in 1959, who made a film of the same name starring Gérard Philippe. John Malkovich as Valmont embarks on a game of exalted passion with the innocent Madame de Tourvel. He writes her letters and never misses an opportunity to declare his love. However, he does not want real affection, but only to seduce the charming woman. The cruel plan also involves the long-suffering Marquise de Merteuil. None of the trio knows for whom toying with sex and love will ultimately prove fatal. Glenn Close and Michelle Pfeiffer shine in other roles. The film won three Academy Awards - for writing, production design and costume design...
