In a small village, the sailor Longrin has been raising his daughter Assol alone since the death of his wife, making small wooden boats for a living. The two are the laughing stock of the whole country since Assol tells everyone that a hermit, Eagle, has predicted that the captain of a ship with scarlet sails will come to take her away. Far away, young Arthur lives in his family's castle. He hates the aristocratic atmosphere and dreams of adventures at sea. Chased away by his father, he enlists as a ship's boy.
