The heroes are a married couple, Oldřich and Věra Lavička, who with their children Petřík and Zuzanka go to Loukov to the cottage of their friend, engineer Radim Zvon. They also want to buy a cottage and hope that Zvon will help them. Eventually, they find the picturesque cottage of Grandpa Komárek, who agrees to sell it and rent one room to the Lavičkas in the meantime. The Lavicka's decide to spend their holiday at the cottage.
While Olda finds the stay in the countryside not only good for his health and the children make friends with the kind-hearted Grandpa Komárek, Věra becomes increasingly upset. She is bothered by many things, so she urges her husband more and more strongly to talk to her grandfather, who is clearly in the way, about the sale. Olda invites his friend, the doctor Houdek, to the cottage for the weekend, and he finds out that Grandpa is quite healthy, and when he also meets Grandpa's old father, he realizes that hopes that Mr. Komárek will not be here much longer are false.
In the winter, however, Grandpa still falls ill and despite all the talk Houdek sends him to the hospital. But when the whole family goes to the village a little later with the notary to discuss the sale, they find Grandpa back home, healthy and lively...
