The story takes us to the second half of the 17th century in the Šumperk region and the Velké Losiny estate. It all begins with a seemingly innocent offense by a poor beggar woman who hides a communion wafer in church to give to her sick cow. This minor incident, however, triggers an avalanche of horror. The local nobility summons an impoverished inquisitor, Jindřich František Boblig of Edelstadt (Vladimír Šmeral), to investigate the alleged witchcraft. Driven by a thirst for power and the wealth of rich citizens, Boblig constructs a monstrous show trial. Using brutal torture and psychological terror, he forces confessions from dozens of innocent people. The only man who finds the courage to stand up to this twisted machinery is the enlightened dean Kryštof Alois Lautner (Elo Romančík), which ultimately signs his own death warrant.
