Maggie (Dakota Johnson) aspires to become a successful music producer. As the personal assistant to pop icon Grace Davis (Tracee Ellis Ross), she should theoretically have the best training, but in practice it just doesn't work that way.
Maggie is the last minion in Tracee's life, fetching coffee and clothes from the dry cleaners, ready to execute even her boss's craziest ideas around the clock. If he has an artistic idea, Traci's producer Jack (Ice Cube) dismisses it contemptuously every time. And a good idea would come in handy, because the hitherto successful musical merry-go-round is just starting to stall. Trace knows that if she's not going to miss the train, she should come up with something new, but she has no idea what that should be. Slightly disgraced Maggie discovers a young street musician named David (Kelvin Harrison, Jr.) and decides to help him get his career off the ground and help herself fulfill a lifelong dream.
But two such demanding professions can't be pursued at the same time, with the added complication of Maggie falling in love with her "client". Some dreams can be lived, but some you have to wake up from in time...
