The ability to run the fastest of anyone in the world (on whatever world he's currently on), Sonic the Hedgehog would trade for a real friend in a heartbeat. He does go out of his forest retreat to visit the good-natured small-town sheriff Tom (James Marsden), but he doesn't quite count, because he hasn't had time to notice Sonic at his speed. And Sonic tries not to leave a trace of his presence, knowing that they'd come after him then. Who? Everybody! But even the most cautious hedgehog can make a small mistake, which in his case was temporarily shutting down the power in half of America. Clueless and worried, the government hires the most capable genius ever, the slightly mad Doctor Robotnik (Jim Carrey), to uncover the cause of the colossal blackout. And he soon smells Sonic's trail. Sonic suddenly discovers that even the fastest legs may not be enough to make a successful escape, especially since he's lost the magic rings that allowed him to travel quickly between different worlds. The only one who knows their current location is his "buddy", Sheriff Tom, and he's not exactly keen on saving the alien hedgehog from the indefatigable and resourceful Doctor Robotnik. But then, like a good lawman, he realises that the weak must be defended, and things start to happen...
