Sarah Jordan (Angelina Jolie), a young woman of high social standing, lives in London when one day she accidentally overhears a desperate plea from an uninvited guest — humanitarian worker Dr. Nick Callahan (Clive Owen). His request for help for the destitute children in his care completely changes her life. Drawn to Nick and his cause, Sarah impulsively decides to join him, leave her comfortable life in London behind, and work alongside him in refugee camps. The demanding mission takes her to strange and dangerous places where many people arrive, but few survive. She soon discovers that the harsh conditions she endures — along with her growing attraction to the charismatic and unpredictable doctor — ignite within her a desire to save human lives… and she is determined to risk her own.
