Nelson Wright, a medical student at the University of Chicago, undertakes a daring experiment. He puts himself in a state of clinical death to see if there is such a thing as an afterlife. He is joined in the experiment by his friends, researcher Rachel, student David, notorious womanizer Joe, and chronicler Randy. Nelson's senses sharpen after a successful experiment that results in nightmares. The others follow suit. Clinical death stirs up ancient memories and guilt, forcing them to correct their own lives even at the cost of endangering it.
