One of the most successful films of the 1980s takes place at Christmas time, when Mr Peltzer buys an unusual gift for his son Billy in a run-down Chinatown shop: a mogwai, a small teddy bear-like animal. But there are strict rules to keeping an animal. It can't be exposed to light, it can't get wet and it can't be fed after midnight. Of course, Billy breaks all the prohibitions, albeit unknowingly, and the result is streets full of strange and notoriously mischievous monsters that begin to destroy the entire town and terrorize its inhabitants.
