Dune is based on a science fiction literary novel by Frank Herbert about a war between the rulers of different planets in the year 10191. In 10191, the ruler of the universe seeks to gain control of a substance that enables space travel. This substance is found only on the Desert Planet. The inhabitants, led by their saviour Paul Atreides, seek to free themselves from the ruler. David Lynch creates his story from the future with wondrous images. This is his first experiment with colours, which are strongly stylized (the predominant shade is sand, rocks, earth). Lynch calls his film a "symphony of space", but admits that the sci-fi genre does not suit him very well. However, the film came at a time when audiences were already oversaturated with "Star Wars" films, and for those familiar with Herbert's novel, Lynch's version was not satisfactory enough...
